Week 6

This week we took a look at the plants that we planted a few weeks ago. Our plant had multiple buds of flowers on it and and had tall stalks. We then created a bee stick by taking a stick and putting a dead bee at the end. This was used to rub on the buds of the plant to pollinate it.  I found this confusing because it is odd to me that although a bee is dead it is still able to pollinate.

After this we learned about sea turtles and how people can harm or be helpful for their chance of surviving. Learning about this can be helpful for my future students so they understand their actions affect the planet and the living things on Earth.

    Hi Taylor,
    I think the reason a dead bee is able to pollinate has more to do with the structuring of a bees body then it does with the bee being alive. I am assuming that a living bee would probably do a better job do to it's natural movements but a dead one still works? Personally I would have preferred to use something artificial to pollinate the flowers but that is personal preference.

    Hi, Taylor! I also had the same confusion about how a bee could pollinate even if it was dead or dried. I am hoping that we get to talk more about the effect of bees on our plants next lab! I know we discussed their purpose a little bit, but I am hoping we can learn more so we can share our information and answer the same questions for our future students!

Week 7

 This week we learned about DNA which contains the genetic information that is necessary for an organism to develop and function. We did an activity where you flipped a coin to see what traits the person was going to have, heads was dominant and tails was recessive. If both or one of the parents has the dominant trait the child will receive that, to get the recessive trait both parents must have it.  The activity would be good to use in a future classroom when teaching students about DNA and genetic makeup. One remaining question I have is if there is a possibility for a child to get a recessive trait if neither of the parents have it.

Week 3

This week we looked at the seeds we planted in the cups last week. When we pulled the cups out of the fast planter the seeds began to sprout.  We then learned the life cycle of multiple animals and my group researched the life cycle of a flower. A flower begins as a seed, turns to a sprout, then grows to a young flower, and matures into an adult flower. I already knew this information, but I was surprised that a life cycle is only complete if there is four or more steps not less.  The project we did on the plate with playdoh kept me intrigued and I think it would be a good lesson to incorporate into my future classroom. This will allow them to learn about life cycles through a hands-on lesson. We then took a quad planter and added fertilizer, soil, seed, and water and placed this into the fast planter.

Week 8

  This week in lab, I learned that structural changes to genes, known as mutations, can impact proteins and may lead to harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects on an organism's structure of function. Mutations involve changes in the DNA sequence, whether it is a nucleotide or base. I also gained a deeper understanding of how DNA codes for proteins. Every three bases form a codon, which corresponds to a specific amino acid which is often referred to as the building blocks of proteins. These three-letter sequences provide the instructions for assembling proteins one step at a time, with certain codons signaling when to start or stop the process.  Our discussion on genotypes and phenotypes was easily connected to what we have been learning in lab and lecture over the past few weeks.
