Week 1
In class this week we talked a lot about the NGSS which is the science standards used for elementary classes in Iowa. These standards are not only used in Iowa but are implemented across the country in various states. In this class we learn to understand these standards and the content included. Each standard is crucial for students to gain an equitable understanding of science for their grade level.
Before being able to teach science we must have a classroom to teach this material, so as a group we created what we want our future classroom to look like. Our group included lots of bright colors and windows to make our classroom fun and welcoming. The students will sit in groups so they are able to work together and build ideas with one another. There is a reading corner with a small classroom library so the students have a fun place to read. In the classroom library we will provide various types of books so all students are intrigued to read and the fun seating helps reading become more enjoyable for students who struggle. The teacher will have a personal desk as well as a half moon shaped desk to be able to work one on one with students or with multiple students. Hooks were also added for students to have a place for all their belongings to prevent clutter in the room. Lastly, the cabinets underneath the counter towards the back of the room is where all supplies will be placed. There is a sink on the counter so kids can wash their hands there instead of traveling outside the classroom to the bathroom.During lecture we learned what we are going to do throughout the semester. We discussed an overview of what we were going to learn throughout the semester. There will be four exams consisting of 60% of our grade and there is weekly assignments that consists of 20% of our grade. The last 20% is our School of the Wild observation and LS Lesson planning.
In lecture we then discussed the characteristics of living things and that they are made up of cells. We then discussed what living things do such as producing energy, responding to their environment, and reproduction.
Question: How do teachers alter the standards to fit students needs?
Hello, Taylor! I liked how you summarized the important aspects of the material we covered this week in lab and lecture! I found it helpful that you shared how our final grade is made up. This way you can have your own place to look if you can't find it in the syllabus, or if any peers did not hear that in the lecture. Lastly, I thought the model of your future classroom was explained perfectly. I enjoyed all the small details that were added. No matter the size they are all important in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor, it's exciting to see your group’s thoughtful approach to designing an ideal classroom that fosters collaboration, engagement, and inclusivity, such as incorporating group seating, a diverse library, and practical features like hooks and a sink. I also believe understanding and implementing the NGSS is essential for ensuring students gain equitable access to science education. I liked how you did an overview of the semester and emphasized the important exams and assignments that are significant to know for our grades this semester.
